It's the FOMO, we don't want to read, instead we want to portray ourselves as someone that reads.
When you read about a book, you tend to know what most think of it as opposed to actually reading it, where you tend to know what you think about it.
You are also absolutely true about if everyone is talking about a book, it sucks.
Most of the best books I have read are pretty obscure ones.
Well, it's again the distribution of IQ. Anything that panders to the average IQ will pander to the multitude and will end up becoming famous.
Controversial, intellectual, literary masterpieces won't. It's restricted to the tiny circle of people smart enough to appreciate it.
