I totally agree! Publications served as an amazing way to filter for quality. I agree that quality is highly subjective but at the least, the standards guaranteed that writers would work hard on their pieces.
BH for example used to be the most premium publication in terms of acceptance standards. It had taken me a painstaking amount of effort and time to get my first commissioned piece back then.
It still is one of the biggest and best publications but I think we can all agree that since the advent of relational medium, acceptance thresholds have been loosened a fair bit.
While gate-keepers might not be perfect for free expression, they at least help maintain the quality of content being put out.
Just my 2 cents. Given the idea machine you are, I'm certain you must have a ton of amazing ideas already.
